Patients' Choice Awards
Is your Physician committed to Patient-Centred Care?
Who can I nominate: Family Doctors or Hospital-based Specialists
Where will the next initiative be held? The location of the next Patients' Choice Awards has yet to be decided. We will announce the location in PAC's Patient Voice e-newsletter so subscribe and stay connected!
Can I still email or mail my nomination in the meantime? Of course, however we will consider it as a patient narrative. Narratives help to increase the influence of the patient perspective and offer a model for improving health outcomes.
PAC recognizes that there are many health care organizations and professionals who display great understanding and are very responsive to the patient perspective on health care, and who provide patient sensitive service. Because we believe that there is too little public acknowledgment of these instances of good practice, PAC has initiated the Patients’ Choice Awards in collaboration with the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). This initiative is the first of its kind in Canada where patients can nominate physicians or hospital- based specialists and another group, also patients, judge the entries and decide the winners.
Every year we have received many thoughtful stories explaining the type of care that patients' value and we are looking forward to receiving nominations for this year's awards as well.
Here is an excerpt from the acceptance speech of a recipient in 2010, Dr. Carolyn Brown:
"Receiving this award is a great honor. I want to thank my patient who nominated me. It is a privilege being involved with patients at times of stress and illness. At these times, we can learn more from the patient about his/her concerns. The Family Health Teams in Peterborough, established under the guidance of Dr. Don Harterre, have helped tremendously in allowing family physicians to have more time for direct patient care. There is a team approach in Peterborough Clinic as well and the care given to patients by the medical assistants and nurses, as well as the support from other colleagues in the clinic make a great difference. Thank you for this recognition."
