What should I consider when submitting my nomination?  It's important to recognize health care professionals who are responsive to the type of care that patients' value. Begin by describing how your caregiver is responsive to your needs, values and how he or she includes your perspective.

We believe that there is too little public acknowledgment of instances of good practice in health care, so PAC has initiated the Patients' Choice Awards in collaboration with the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). This initiative is the first of its kind in Canada where patients can nominate physicians or hospital-based specialists and another group, also patients, judge the entries and decide the winners.

Here is an excerpt from the acceptance speech of a 2010 winner, Dr. Carolyn Brown:

"Receiving this award is a great honor. I want to thank my patient who nominated me. It is a privilege being involved with patients at times of stress and illness. At these times, we can learn more from the patient about his/her concerns. There is a team approach in Peterborough Clinic as well and the care given to patients by the medical assistants and nurses, as well as the support from other colleagues in the clinic make a great difference. Thank you for this recognition."
