Promoting the role of patients and the patient voice in all areas of health care.
Jan Plecash
I am a PhD student and project researcher at the Culture of Cities Centre, where I have been working on issues related to the cultural understanding of death and dying; co-editing a book on birth as a social and cultural phenomenon; and researching medical and alternative conceptions of parenting as an exercise in care of self and other.
I joined PAC initially as a researcher and a private individual with extensive experience of the medical encounter between parents and professionals in neonatal intensive care units. My ‘patient experience’ has thus been one, not unusual in pediatrics, of functioning as the patient’s proxy, and has raised for me many of the same concerns over quality of communications, knowledge claims and the largely unexamined stresses of decision-making and life with illness that other members of PAC have expressed in their stories. I look forward to bringing perspectives from the humanities to PAC’s initiatives.
